We invite you to share our annual membership dinner with Friends, members of the University, and our amazing group of 2015-16 scholarship recipients. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with drinks in the lounge. Menu information to come. The dinner cost is $20 per person and scholarship recipients attend as guests of the Friends. If you have dietary restrictions, please note your needs on the reservation form (download above). Since the dinner will be held outdoors in the central patio, we suggest that you dress accordingly.

  • Time: 11:30 am- 1:30pm
  • Where: International Center Patio
  • Why: It is with a heavy heart that we ask you to join us to bid farewell to the International Center and enjoy a final meal with fellow Friends members, IC Staff members, our wonderful international visitors and volunteers.

    We ask everyone to bring your choice of an appetizer or main course that will feed 6-8 people. 

    The Friends will provide drinks and desserts and thus it is important that you make a reservation! The Friends will also provide napkins, plates, cups, and utensils.

    The lunch will be held outdoors in the central patio and I hope we will have room to set up the food in the dining room.

Join us as we celebrate Mexico enjoying the sounds and flavors of a vibrant culture on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Our menu features dishes from Mexico that are different from the ones found in most local Mexican restaurants and our evenings activities will foster a fiesta atmosphere. This is a family friendly, casual, affordable evening! Come alone or with your amigos and amigas or come to make new amigos! RESERVE by April 29!

Saturday, October 25, 2014: Scholarship Benefit/Ethnic Dinner: A Journey to Iran (see flyer)

  • Time: 6:30 pm
  • Location: International Center

Reservation forms must be received by Friday, October 15.

Diners will be treated to a lavish multi-course meal featuring traditional Persian dishes beginning with an appetizer of kashk bademjan (eggplant and cheese dip), served with sangak (wheat flatbread), followed by salad olivieh (chicken salad), fesenjon polo (pomegranate, walnut and chicken stew), kalam polo (rice with tiny meatballs and magic grape seed powder), salad shirazi, (variant of a Greek salad), and ending wtih ranginak (date roulade). Vegetarians will enjoy kookoo sib zamini (Persian spiced potato pancake).

After dinner, guests will enjoy a photographic presentation by Negin Nazarian and Alireza Sarebanha, both UCSD PhD students pursuing degrees in engineering. The after dinner program is intended to provide the audience with a view of Iran's rich cultural heritage beyond what you read in the newspaper.

Cost $40 Friends Members; $50 Friends Guests/Community; $25 UCSD Post Docs/Graduate/Undergraduate Students. Please no children. Proceeds from this dinner will benefit the Friends of the International Center Scholarship Fund. Saturday, October 19, 2013 Scholarship Benefit Dinner

High Andean Dinner and Presentation by Professor Chris Wills and Dr. Henri Migala 

Time:  Saturday, October 19, 2013, 6:30 p.m.
Location:  International Center Cost:  $40 Non-Students, $20 Students; $35 Friends Members

Advance Reservations only:  maximum 90

Reservation forms must be received by Friday, October 11.

Dinner will feature dishes from the High Andes: anticuchos (skewers with beef heart and chicken breast), papas a la huancaina (potatoes with cheese sauce), sweet potato, corn on the cob, aji de gallina (chicken in a mild yellow pepper sauce), rice, quinoa salad, and flan. Plentiful pisco sours will help the evening run smoothly. Chicha morada (a non-alcoholic blue corn drink), white wine, and sparkling water will also be part of the traditional dinner.

Dinner will be followed by an illustrated description of the high Andean parts of Peru, Bolivia and Chile by Biology Professor Christopher Wills, author of "The Darwinian Tourist" and "Green Equilibrium", and Director of the International House, Dr. Henri Migala. This event is hosted by the Friends of the International Center.  All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the International Center Scholarship Fund and any amount paid beyond $10 per person is tax deductible.

Reservations with payment must be made by Friday, December 6th. You may make your reservations and pay at either the Friends of the International Center Resale Shop, Monday - Friday 10 am - 3:30 pm, or with Dagmar Bocakova on Wednesdays at the International Center from 10 am - noon. The International Center is located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. You may pay with cash or by check made payable to the Friends of the International Center. 

Everyone welcome: Friends, Family, Spouses/Partners, Children. Dinner will feature: Three Types of Pizza, Winter Salad with Pears, Assorted Holiday Cookies, Pop Corn,Mulled Wine, Apple Cider, and Hot Tea.

Saturday, January 25, 2014 Scholarship Fundraiser: Ethnic Dinner: Forest Spirits, Fire Dances and Erupting Volcanoes

In celebration of the Chinese New Year (The Year of the Horse), Chef Jimmy Chen and his team will prepare another memorable feast featuring highly refined Chinese dishes. Following dinner, guests will be treated to an illustrated presentation on New Britain, a remote part of New Guinea, by Biology Professor Christopher Wills, author of "The Darwinian Tourist" and "Green Equilibrium." The presentation will provide a vicarious journey to one of the most active volcanic regions of the Pacific's Ring of Fire, where, in addition to learning about the island's every-changing geology, you will visit the rich coral reefs of Kimbe Bay, attend a Mask Festival, and dance through the flames of a bonfire.

This event is hosted by the Friends of the International Center. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the International Center Scholarship Fund, and any amount paid beyond $15 per person is tax-deductible.
