Find a Program

Thinking of going abroad? Here's how to do it.

Follow these steps:

1. Attend a First Steps session.

Sign up online for a mandatory First Steps session, led by student assistants who have returned from abroad.

First Steps sessions are held almost every day in the Programs Abroad Office at the International Center (map and directions).

The half-hour presentation will:

  • Show you tools for doing research and finding information on programs
  • Walk you through the steps to apply and the application process
  • Prepare you to meet with an advisor.

2. Research available programs.

The Programs Abroad Office has many resources available to help you learn about your options:

3. Begin the application process.

There are different application processes for the Education Abroad Program (EAP), Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), or Global Seminars (GS)

If you know which program you're interested in, you are welcome to begin the application before meeting with an advisor.

4. Meet with an advisor.

  • Narrow down your possible program choices to a specific region or country. Advisors have specific country responsibilities.
  • Schedule an appointment with the advisor for your country to review your eligibility and answer questions about academic credit and financial aid. Call (858) 534-1123, or visit our office in person.
  • Complete a Pre-Advising Worksheet (PDF) to help you match your background to the prerequisites of the program(s) you have chosen. The advisor will review this worksheet with you.
  • Before the appointment, fill out an online interest profile to begin your record in the Programs Abroad database. The receptionist will print a copy for the advisor.
  • Ask the advisor any questions you have about the program, your academic plan, the application process, or other specific concerns you may have.

5. Submit your application packet to PAO.

Deliver the packet to the Programs Abroad Office, on the 2nd floor of the International Center (map and directions).  We are open M-F 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

No matter who you are or what you are studying, we can help you find the right program.
