Taxes: A How-To for Internationals

When preparing your 2007 taxes remember the following simple rules:

  • All internationals MUST complete and submit tax documents.

  • Filings should reflect US-based income earned between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007.  Do not consider income from any time outside these dates.  If you are filing as a nonresident alien, do not consider income from sources outside the USA either.

  • Remember that filing tax returns means doing three different things:

    • Informing the US, state, and local governments of how much money you made

    • Based on your reported income, calculating how much tax you owe

    • Determining how much money should be refunded (or how much you still owe)

The University of Texas at Austin International Office has designed a free tax assistance website: www.utexas.edu/international/taxes/. The University of Texas at Austin welcomes users from across the nation to access their site. A few notes:

  • You should print your filled forms before leaving the site, since you cannot save the forms.

  • Instructions for completing forms are generally not on the same page as the form itself. You should print the form instructions for reference before beginning form completion online.

  • Data will be lost if you are timed out while preparing a form.
