"Did you know that UC San Diego has?

  • more than 4,300 international students, researchers and faculty from all over the world?
  • Approximately 800 students preparing for or returning from study abroad each year?
  • Over 1,000 volunteers actively contributing to international exchange through the International Center?

The UC San Diego International Center welcomes students, staff, faculty, and members of the community as volunteers. As a volunteer, you can have an on-going personal contact with one person or meet new international students and scholars every week.

What follows is a general description of the volunteer opportunities available and the level of involvement for each program. For more information, call 534-3730.

Orientation Assistants (OA)
Welcome new international students, scholars, and families to UC San Diego, San Diego, and the United States during the Fall 2007 New International Student Orientation. Required training program on Monday, August 25, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Volunteer at least 8 hours a week from Tuesday, August 26 through Friday, September 19, 2008 and some additional hours on Tuesday, September 23, 2008.
  • Guide newcomers to resources to ease their adjustment to a new city and US culture.
  • Submit your application to volunteer before June 30, 2008.
UC San Diego Tutor Program: English in Action
Help an international student, scholar, or family member improve conversational English skills and become more familiar with our culture. We provide training, resource library, and quarterly workshops.
  • One Saturday morning orientation session
  • One to two hours per week tutoring
  • Commitment for twelve months
Friends of the International Center
Support the umbrella organization of volunteers at the International Center. Staff the Friends Office, input data on the computer, or help with special events and programs.
  • Time commitment varies
  • Projects vary to suit your skills and interests
  • Member discounts and special events
Wednesday Morning Coffee
Help host our weekly informal gathering of international spouses and children. Mingle with guests and help organize the sharing of crafts and traditions.
  • Any Wednesday morning, 10-12noon
  • Children up to five years welcome

International Cafe - Weekly event Assistants
Be a luncheon host to over 300 international students and scholars. Greet guests, help serve lunch, and assist with food preparation. We plan the menu, do the shopping, and provide your lunch.
  • At least two Fridays a month
  • Three to four hours in the morning or early afternoon
  • Three month commitment
International Partners Program
Make friends with an international visitor with whom you share common interests or about whose country you are interested. We match American students with international students and provide guidelines about maintaining contact.
  • Two or three activities per academic quarter, whatever you and your partner choose
  • One social gathering each quarter at the International Center for all participants
  • Commitment for one academic year
  • No homestay
Resale Shop
Help staff the Friends Resale Shop. Greet customers, accept donations, and handle sales. Proceeds are used for UC San Diego scholarships.

Language Exchange
Contact: Resource File at the International Center
Help someone learn your language and enjoy conversational practice in their language in exchange. You review who is available and choose your partner.

Cooking in America Class
Help teach one class to international spouses. Students learn how to cook with American ingredients and how to plan and prepare American dishes. Six Thursday mornings each academic quarter (one teacher needed per class).

Oceanids Newcomer Group
The Oceanids, UC San Diego's women's organization, welcomes newcomers to UC San Diego monthly activities such as holiday parties, neighborhood coffees, garden wine parties, whale-watching by chartered boat, picnics, etc. Be sure to fill out the Oceanids Newcomers Group application to participate in these activities.
Ethnic Lunches
Once each quarter during the academic year a group of spouses from the Wednesday Morning Coffees volunteer to help prepare lunch featuring specialty dishes from their country.
Memberships
The Friends of the International Center foster the Center's volunteer projects, operate the Resale Shop, generate scholarships for UC San Diego students, and publish a monthly newsletter for over 400 members. Special student memberships are available.
Oceanids membership is open to all women and men associated with UC San Diego. They sponsor special interest groups and service projects, operate a kitchen/baby furniture rental for short-term visitors, and publish a monthly newsletter for their 500 members. While you are volunteering, there is free, limited parking available in the special lot adjacent to the International Center.
